Concert Conversations

Before each Masterworks performance you can experience the many fascinating perspectives on the concert program that only our Music Director and musicians, and often the guest artists, can provide. Maestro Yeh will present an entertaining and informative pre-concert talk preceding the performances from the stage at      7 p.m. in the theater. Sit as close to the stage as you wish for this talk.

Scheherazade!

Gounod's symphonies are rarely heard so this concert will be a special treat. Plus, we'll feature the Symphony's own acclaimed wind and brass sections. Based on the book One Thousand and One Arabian Nights, Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade is lauded for its dazzling, haunting orchestration. The work will feature many principal players, especially SBSO's concertmaster, Zofia Glashauser.

Tales of the Classical Guitar

Classical guitarist Robert Belinic has performed throughout the U.S. and Europe and earned international recognition as the first guitarist to win Young Concert Artist audtions to New York. Mr. Belinic has been characterized as "a young genius, a poet, and a super-sensitive musician" and is known for his intense passion, charisma, and breathaking performances. Kodaly's Hary Janos Suite will captivate you with its intriguing Hungarian tall tale.

Sacred Spring: A Choral Festival


Danielle Svonavec and Stephen Lancaster, voice faculty at the University of Notre Dame, join conductor Robert N. Ham and the Bethel College Concert Choir, plus conductor Alexander Blachly and the Notre Dame Chorale to perform traditional Judeo-Christian music for this beautiful holiday celebration. The American composer Leonard Bernstein, better known for his groundbreaking West Side Story, composed the featured Chichester Psalms.

Magical Melodies

Terence Wilson is one of today's most gifted pianists with numerous national awards and prizes to his credit. He has performed with many prestigious ensembles across the country and has played in Chicago's Ravinia Festival, Tanglewood, Wolf Trap, New York and the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. The highlight of this melodic concert will be the dazzling interplay of Wilson's piano and the orchestra in Khachaturian's piece.

James Westwater, Photo Choreographer

James Westwater artfully fuses the music of Copland with giant-screen panoramic photgraphs to create a breath-takingly beautiful photographic concerto. Michiana students will showcase their own version of this wonderful medium with a special work they'll help create for the Young People's Discovery concerts.

Our June H. Edwards Chamber Concert Series programs will be presented Sunday afternoons at 2:30pm at Notre Dame's DeBartolo Performing Arts Center.

Come for an anfternoon of timeless Baroque favorites!

Listen for Haydn's "Clock" movement in one of his best loved symphonies. Soloist Jennet Ingle has performed with the Chicago and Milwaukee Symphony Orchestras and has been principal oboe of the Illinois Symphony Orchestra since 1997. She has been principal oboe for the SBSO since 2006.

Zounds!

An Orchestral Parade


This festival of fun features music about animals, marches and other fun works. Morton Gould's Hoedown mixes firefighters with our orchestra! With a costume contest and parade (costumes encouraged). And before the concert, kids can try out various orchestra instruments at the annual Instrument Petting Zoo.


Instrument Petting Zoo at 2:00p.m.
Children love to visit our "zoo," where they can touch the instruments of the orchestra, and actually produce sounds on them assisted by SBSO musicians and volunteers.

Annual Costume Parade

At the end of the concert our young audience is invited to show off their Halloween costumes.  Fun prizes awarded in many categories make this a special treat.

featuring the Side-by-Side Orchestra

and Young Artist Competition winners.

 

Copland's Lincoln Portrait, pieces by William Grant Still and one of Lincoln's favorite works, Verdi's La Forza del Destino. Also featured will be the Grand Prize Winner of our annual Young Artist Competition.

A Symphony treasure! Talented high school musicians from Northern Indiana and Southwest Michigan play alongside our own veteran Symphony musicians in what has become one of our favorite concerts. Who knows? There could be a new super star in the making!

Our ever-popular Christmas Concert welcomes back Diane Penning, again bringing her ravishing voice and cherished Christmas favorites to Michiana. The South Bend High School Festival Choir, composed of members of four local high schools, join her for a holiday afternoon that promises to be unforgettable. And yes, there is a special appearance by a right jolly old elf!
