Bang! Pluck! and Blow! - The Physics of Music

April 2 & 3, 2008  (Wednesday and Thursday)

Morris Performing Arts Center

Concerts at 9:15 AM and 10:45 AM each day

The South Bend Symphony teams up with Purdue University's Physics on the Road program to present a concert that unlocks the scientific mysteries of how instruments make music.  Through fun musical examples and exciting onstage experiements students will gain a better understanding of basic physics concepts and the scientific method.

The Young People’s Discovery Concerts introduce children to the thrills of live orchestra concerts. Students learn about a variety of musical subjects while listening to great works of music, enjoying creative narration, and participating in interactive activities led from the stage. In addition, a study guide and CD are provided with registration allowing teachers and students to prepare for the concert ahead of time. The CD includes excerpts of the pieces to be performed and the booklet is filled with biographical information on the composers, tidbits about the pieces, and musical activities based on the concert’s theme.

Application Procedure:
There is a $2 fee per student, chaperones and students in the free lunch program attend for free. After registration, participants
will be sent an invoice and concert preparation materials.

The registration deadline is Wednesday, March 1, 2008.
