Executive Director --  Jane E. Hunter

Jane E. Hunter was appointed as Executive Director of the South Bend Symphony in July, 2006.  Ms. Hunter comes to South Bend from the Portland (Maine) Symphony, where she served as the Executive Director for 19 years.

She began her career in arts management in 1976 when she was appointed Business Manager of the Midland (Michigan) Symphony Orchestra, a position she held until 1981, when she was named Orchestra Manager of the Springfield (Massachusetts) Symphony Orchestra Association. In 1985, she was named General Manager of the Kalamazoo Symphony.

 

A native of the Midwest, Ms. Hunter grew up in suburban Detroit and earned Bachelor and Master of Music degrees in Cello Performance from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor in 1973 and 1974, respectively. She also studied at the Yale Summer School of Music and Art in 1974 on full fellowship.

 

She began her career as the principal cellist of the Flint Symphony Orchestra and String Specialist for the Flint Public Schools, a position she held from 1974-76. She also served as adjunct instructor of cello at the University of Michigan-Flint from 1974-77.

 

Ms. Hunter was active with the Michigan Orchestra Association and served as its president from 1979-81. She served as an Advisory Board member of the Arts Council of Greater Kalamazoo, and has served as a grants panelist for the National Endowment for the Arts Orchestra Panel, the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts and the Massachusetts Cultural Council.

 

Ms. Hunter served as the secretary of Greater Portland C.A.R.E.S., a citizens' support group organized to raise funds for the renovation of Portland City Hall Auditorium. Together with the Executive Director of PCA Great Performances, she was a co-founder of PortTix, a for profit box office company. She was also a Director of Acadia Trust, N.A. from 1993-99. She has also served on several committees of the national association, the American Symphony Orchestra League. In 1999, Ms. Hunter was a recipient of the YWCA's Women of Achievement Award.

Development Director --  Joyce F. Stifel has over 25-years of experience with the South Bend Symphony, and has served as the Vice President and Director of Development for the past nine years. From 1994-1996 she was Executive Director of Leadership South Bend / Mishawaka , and previously served as Community Relations and Development Coordinator for the Madison Foundation and Development consultant for the YWCA of St. Joseph County. Ms. Stifel has been a member of the Symphony's Board of Directors, Orchestra League, and Graduate Intern. She currently serves on the Board of the I.U. – South Bend Arts Foundation and the Board of Leadership South Bend / Mishawaka . Previously Stifel served on the Board of the Stanley Clark School , the National Board of the American Cancer Society, and as a member of the Junior League of South Bend.

 

Stifel earned a Master of Science Degree, with a concentration in Not-for-Profit Administration, from the University of Notre Dame in 1985. She has resided in South Bend since 1979, coming here from the Cleveland , Ohio area where she was actively involved with the Cleveland Symphony Orchestra and other arts organizations.
