The Donald A. Dake Chamber Music Academy 2002

The 2008 Summer Academy will take place
June 23- June 27, 2008.

Applications are DUE: Friday, May 2, 2008

An exciting opportunity for wind and string players to experience the challenge and joy of small ensemble playing, the Donald A. Dake Summer Chamber Music Academy is a non-residential program open to advanced high school musicians in grades 9-12. Students study the challenging repertoire of classical chamber music and attend a daily Masterclass, coached and taught by the Artist Faculty, while gaining experience in a variety of music-related subjects in special seminars by our Guest Clinicians. Small Ensemble

Held on the beautiful campus of Saint Mary's College, studies are balanced with a Faculty Concert, daily non-music activities and a pizza party, providing an opportunity for faculty and students to share fun and relaxation.

Thursday morning performances on local radio and television stations by selected ensembles serve as a prelude to the Thursday evening public performance at Saint Mary's College and a concert tour Friday morning.

Conducting Seminar

The South Bend Symphony is proud to be able to offer a special conducting seminar in conjunction with the Dake Academy . This unique opportunity gives high school students a chance to experience the world of a conductor. Maestro Tsung Yeh works daily with students on baton technique, score reading and interpretation and rehearsal skills. The Seminar culminates in a hands-on opportunity to conduct a faculty ensemble. Interested students should be able to read bass and treble clef and have at least some familiarity with piano. Students enrolled in the Conducting Seminar class with Maestro Yeh will have schedule adjustments as needed for afternoon activities.

 ConcertTuition: $50.00

Tuition includes all music, daily lunch on the campus of Saint Mary's College, the pizza party, transportation for the Friday tour, and a T-shirt.

The tuition for all Academy students has been significantly reduced from the actual costs through the generosity of the Donald A. Dake Endowment Fund. Scholarship awards are based on financial need, talent, and the needs of the Academy.

Tips for Making a Placement Tape/CD
(CD preferred)

Below are some suggestions to help you prepare your placement tape/CD.

  1. Use a high quality tape or CD.
  2. Carefully check your recording levels. Be sure that they are neither too high nor too low.
  3. On the tape/CD case, please write your name / instrument and list which scale you will be performing and the title of your solos. Also label the tape/CD with your name and instrument.
  4. Please start with the scale right away.  DO NOT include a spoken introduction.
  5. Be sure to include all required material on the tape/CD. Record the scale first, then the solos.
  6. Try to record on a machine that has a minimal "wow and flutter," especially wind players.  Placing the microphone(s) must be done very carefully. (If too far away, the sound tends to be "boomy") .
  7. Choose your excerpts wisely. Cover the entire range of your instrument within your capabilities.
  8. Before you send the tape/CD, listen to it, be sure that it is not blank and that all selections have been recorded successfully.
  9. If you are recording to tape, be sure to rewind your completed tape BEFORE mailing it. If you are recording to CD make sure it plays in CD players other than the computer.
