In
the South Bend Symphony Orchestra's own version of "American
Idol," students from seven counties in Northern Indiana
and Southern Michigan compete for cash prizes and the opportunity
to perform as a soloist with the South Bend Symphony.
GRAND
PRIZE $1,000 plus a performance with the South Bend
Symphony
Division
Prizes $300 to
be given in the categories of:
Piano,
Strings, Voice, and Brass/Percussion/Woodwinds
APPLICATION
PROCEDURE: Applications are due by Friday,
December 7, 2007, and must include:
- Application form
- Registration Fee - $12
- Musical Resume
- Letter of Recommendation from a music teacher.

ELIGIBILITY:
All students through their senior year in high school
are eligible to audition if they reside or attend school in
one of the following counties:
In
Indiana: St. Joseph, Elkhart, La Porte, Marshall, Starke.
In
Michigan: Cass, Berrien
AUDITION
MATERIALS: The audition material should be one movement
of a concerto or other composition for solo instrument/voice
and orchestra not exceeding ten minutes. If cuts are needed,
they may be determined by the student's teacher. It is not
necessary to memorize the work. Those students competing in
the voice division must discuss repertoire with SBSO Educational
Programming Coordinator prior to signing up for an audition
time. Piano accompanists are MANDATORY for all auditions.
Students are responsible for providing their own accompanist.
AUDITION
RULES: At their sole discretion, judges may award
winners in each of the four division categories ($300), and
additionally a Grand Prize winner ($700 additional) may be
selected from the Division winners. The Grand Prize Winner
will be invited to play at a selected concert during the 2006-2007
season. The SBSO artistic staff may decide to offer performance
opportunities to other division winners if appropriate .
PLEASE NOTE: Previous winners of the competition must wait
at least one year before entering the competition.
