(South Bend, IN) May 8, 2017 – Alastair Willis, Grammy-nominated conductor, has been named as the new Music Director of the South Bend Symphony Orchestra (SBSO). The announcement was made by the South Bend Symphony Orchestra Board of Directors, led by president Kyle Everett, the Search Committee, led by Co-Chairs Bruce Bancroft and Joyce Stifel, and Executive Director Agnieszka Rakhmatullaev. His 4-year contract begins immediately, with Mr. Willis assuming the title of Music Director for the upcoming 2017-18 Season.

On Saturday, February 11, 2017 at 8:00 p.m. at the Morris Performing Arts Center, the South Bend Symphony Orchestra will perform Broadway blockbusters in a Rodgers & Hammerstein Celebration. Led by guest conductor Gerald Steichen, the South Bend Symphony and a fabulous Broadway duo will bring the most-loved show-tunes back to life once again.

On Saturday, January 28th at 8:00 pm at the Morris Performing Arts Center, the South Bend Symphony will perform its first Jack M. Champaigne Masterworks Series concert of the New Year, and welcomes its third Music Director Candidate José-Luis Novo. As the SBSO’s season-long Music Director Search reaches its mid-point, robust audiences continue to enjoy the unique conducting styles of each Candidate and eagerly await José-Luis’ performance.

On Monday, January 16, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. at the Morris Performing Arts Center, the South Bend Symphony, led by conductors Dr. Marvin Curtis and Chelsea Tipton II, will perform its annual MLK Day Celebration Concert.  This concert will feature violinist Maria Sanderson, Junior Division Winner of the 2016 Sphinx Competition, and nationally-recognized trumpeter Rodney Marsalis; as well as multiple IU South Bend Choirs and Olivet AME Church Choir.

On Sunday, January 8, 2017 at 2:30 p.m., at the DeBartolo performing Arts Center, the South Bend Symphony will present the first June H. Edwards Chamber Series concert of the new year: “Tsung Yeh Conducts Mozart.” The recently retired Music Director, and now Conductor Laureate, Tsung Yeh will lead the orchestra once again in a vibrant program.  Scott Metlicka, Principal Piccolo of the South Bend Symphony, will be featured as the soloist on Liebermann’s thrilling Concerto for Piccolo and Orchestra.

On Saturday, December 17 at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday, December 18 at 2:30 p.m. at the Morris Performing Arts Center, the South Bend Symphony Orchestra will perform its sparkling Home for the Holidays concerts.  The program is filled with familiar holiday tunes featuring special collaborations with soprano Jessica McCormack, the South Bend Festival Chorus, Southold Dance Theatre, and the Holiday Bell Choir.

On Saturday, December 3rd at 8:00 p.m. at the Morris Performing Arts Center, the South Bend Symphony continues the search for its new Music Director with the second Jack M. Champaigne Masterworks Series concert.  On the heels of a phenomenal season-opening concert, which marked the beginning of our season-long search, as well as a very successful KeyBank Pops Series opener, audiences are eagerly awaiting the arrival of Stilian Kirov.

On Thursday, November 17th and Friday, November 18th, the South Bend Symphony will perform four concerts for over 5,500 area elementary school students titled Sound Waves – an exploration of the connections between music and science.  There will be two performances on each day, at 9:15 a.m. and 10:45 a.m., at the Morris Performing Arts Center and all are welcome to join for any of these interactive concerts!
